Although the configuration process of a Cisco router with a firewall is the same as the configuration of a router without a firewall, but the router with a software-integrated firewall provides the best security features of the networking industry. It improves the insertion of security-based commands that hamper access over the external interfaces.
In the other case, configuration is the challenging tasks for those who are not so much familiar with CLI (Cisco Command Line Interface) and CIOS (Cisco Internetwork Operating System). So, the Cisco router configuration for both custom and standard should only be stabbed by a certified network administrator. Steps are:
  • At the admin workstation, try to install the terminal emulation software; generally, this is placed on the installation CD of the router.
  • Connect the router to the available serial COM port of workstation via the RS-232 serial-cable.
  • Launch the terminal emulation software. Turn on the router; the first boot sequence will start. If your router was configured earlier, then a prompt will visualize as ‘hostname’, otherwise, for a non-configured router it says the ‘Router’.
  • Give an Initial command-line by typing ‘en’ or ‘enable’ and hit ‘Enter’. You will get a password prompt. Type your password so that switch you to restricted mode. The command prompt will modify to the ‘Router#’.
  • Type the ‘conf t’. Hit the “Enter”. It will lead you in the global configuration mode. It will change to the ‘Router (config) #’.
  • Verify that if your current router is prepared with IOS Firewall by entering ‘IP inspect?’ Hit the ‘Enter’. In case, the router includes the IOS firewall, you will get the commands list, which is particularly established for firewall configuration, otherwise, you will get ‘% Unrecognized Command’.
  • If you want to configure exact interfaces, so that prevent access and network traffic, enter ‘interface [NAME]’. Click on the ‘Enter’. The Command prompt modifies to the ‘Router (config-if) #’.
  • Start entering new configuration of your router. Hit ‘Enter’ after each and every command line entry. Recognize for the Firewall configuration which one is best for your network requirements.
  • Once you type all configuration commands, enter ‘CNTL/Z’ and hit ‘Enter’, so that you return in the command line to restricted mode.
  • Enter ‘show IP route’ or ‘show IP arp’ and hit ‘Enter’. You will get the complete IP addresses list of the available networks, notifying your router is configured accurately.
  • On the command prompt, enter ‘show running-config’ and hit ‘Enter’. You will see the new running configuration.
  • Save the router’s new configuration. Enter ‘copy running-config startup-config’ and hit ‘Enter’. It will copy your current configuration to your new configuration, and save it into the memory of the router.
